As a shout out to my friend fellow design lover Jahaila, I'm sharing this awesome web find of this fish condo by Chiasso.

Having mini homelike spaces for dogs and cats seems so luxurious until I found these. These adorable (and ironic) beachfront homes not only have enough room for a couple lil fishies, but they are stackable! How awesome is that? You can have a little fish highrise right in your living room.

...I wonder if you could furnish it with lil plastic, modern furniture. How cool would THAT look?

I found this photo while perusing the web and thought it was the cutest thing. Little, teeny men working hard to make the mushrooms pretty. They even have full ladders and paint rollers!

Could you imagine? It's time for spring and all the little men a come of out of hibernation and start painting the flowers and grass blades. I wonder if they are part of a union?

Amazing Craigslist Deals - Wood Finds

While I am not the biggest fan of mixing many fabrics on one piece of furniture, I would totally own this piece.

Perhaps it's because the rug looks like a laying on it would be like laying on a cloud. Maybe it's the matching stripped feature on the wall. It could just be the equality of the bold solid colors with the patterns on this modern sofa that just do it for me, but I would totally own this sofa, even down to the mismatched armrests (which are interchangeable as well as the backs of the sofa.)

Designed by Italian Zero Tre Architetti, the bright springy colors are perfect for a big bright room making the sofa noticeable but not overbearing.

I'm not quite sure what it is...but I like it.

Is it a runner? An extended fireplace? What the hell is this, I have no idea. But I dig the colors of the tiles, I love the plush seating, huge floor to ceiling windows, and even the arches at the top of the ceiling.

Still not sure what is happening here but whatever it is it works!

Grey Kids Rooms Are Red Hot

One of the cool turns of design, for me, is definitely the evolution of bay and kids rooms. It has upgraded from old school pastel colors like eggshell blues, seagrass greens and mellow yellow to modern slate and charcoal grays sprinkled with pinks.

I am still an advocate of brighter, slightly kidder themed kids rooms but can definitely appreciate the modern spin on the room. Typically we'd imagine a child's room with gray walls and shredded ribbons to belong to Wednesday Addams. This room passes the mark by adding bright pink ribbons in the room as well as hanging adding pretty contrasting photos on the walls. I might appreciate it just a bit more if there were at least one colorful pillow on the bed, but I'll let that pass.

Compact Design is the Way to Go

Now that I am back in New York, I once again appreciate the value of space and how much space is valued at here in the city. As a kid I lived in a studio apartment with not one, not two but seven people (well, 5 of my siblings at that time) and the space was tight but my mom knew how to make it work out for everyone splitting the apartment in two and making one half the communal/family room and the second half the kid's space and I even had my own bed! But it has trained me to appreciate and manage living in tight quarters, such as the space above.

Now that I'm a grown up not only do I not mind living in small spaces, such as a studio, but I also love great designed pieces to place in there as well.

This home which was featured on Apartment Therapy is rented by fellow New Yorker who is greatly inspired by art deco styles and owns great pieces such as an Eames chair and a Louis Ghost Chair.

DreamHome- April 13- December 2011
Every year the Merchandise Mart gives a handful of designers the creative freedom to design a specific room in what they call a "Dream Home". The preview party is a hosted event by the Mart where they raise money for the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation and gives the attendees the chance to be the first to enjoy the spaces and chat with the designers over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Artropolis- April 29 - May 2, 2011
Four days of great arty fun. My second favorite event at the Merchandise Mart for sure. Tons of amazing and creative artworks from all over the world. Between the music, the drinks, the people and the art there is not only a lot of fun to be had but there is a lot to learn about new and evolving art styles.

NeoCon- June 13-15
Probably one off my favorite design events of the year by far. NewCon showcases the new and top of the line commercial products and styles from all over the world. The Merchandise Mart hosts top commercial companies and has an array of great prizes and free swag gifts. It's only for two days so you have to take advantage of it while you can.

Is Upside Down the Right Way to Go?

A Google executive demonstrates that by taking advantage of empty ceiling space you can make a design that's out of this world.

No, the pic isn't upside down is, the little room is!

So the other day I came across this photo of a small furnished space that is meant to be placed on the ceiling of a room. Apparently the creator of the room was done by Google executive Ji Lee which, in theory, makes sense. Considering that Google has access to the earth, Mars and almost all reaches of space why not other dimensions. If you took a trip to his office you just might see little aliens walking in and out of those doors.

Lee says this about his art line titled Parallel World:
"Decorating ceilings was a celebrated art form in the past centuries that somehow got lost through the reductionism of modernism," Lee continues "I wanted to bring a small wink to this space. I also liked the idea that somehow there's a parallel world which coexists with ours."

Other than it's cute uniqueness, I can't find a suitable reason to actually want to have this in a room setting. I couldn't even imagine putting this in my kids room in fear that he would one day grow up to believe that he had little invisible people who would live on his ceiling and play guitar...and then trying to scale the walls to reach them.

Now would I get this as a gag gift for someone, yes. Would I re-gift if someone got it for me...possibly not. Would I put this in my own home, where no one would see it... and imagine little sexy men that live on my ceiling.....absolutely.

Sherwin Williams Commercials Are Awesome

Forget the Super Bowl commercials, Sherwin Williams has them beat creatively hands down.

If you haven't already seen some of the animated commercials by Sherwin Williams then you are missing out! Maybe it is just me that is all geeked out on their creative spin on making worlds out of paint chips with the addition of soft background tunes, but I think they are just brilliant.

The most recent commercial uses the digital paint chips to recreate Manhattan buildings and skyscrapers, air balloons and fields all leading up to a local Sherwin Williams store.

Being one that I am a lover of fun, bright colors and creative commercials every time it comes on I literally stop to watch and embrace it's colorfulness! Now I have been looking all over the net to try to share this commercial with you all, but alas it has not been found...but it will be.

Until then I have found other commercials done by Sherwin Williams in the same style so that you can gauge what it is that I am talking about. This one is cute too but didn't give me the same design goosebumps like the other.

5 Ugly Sofas Found in 15 Seconds

The love of interior design has to encompass the good and the bad design. But when it's bad sometimes it's baaaaaad.

Since moving back to New York I have been on the lookout online for new sofas, new sofa designs and unique sofa layouts in the chance that I want to do something slightly creative. While looking through a myriad of ads and photos I couldn't help but notice that some of the new sofa designs that are claiming to be unique and amazing are quite actually the ugliest designs I've seen in the whole of today.

Ugly Sofa #1: Spiesser Sofa by Hannes Grebin
I can't tell what exactly is supposed to be happening here. It's almost like someone made a hodgepodge of a sofa and then threw the area rug over it and put place mats on the edges. Even down to the spindly legs this sofa gives me the creeps.

Ugly Sofa #2: Deer Valley Canyon by Rustic Best
I know that since I'm a city girl I can't get the gist of certain design styles, such as this one, where people feel inclined to mix horribly dated fabrics with leather. But someone, please, explain!

Ugly Sofa #3: On The Wall Sofa by Avaid Gil
I'd beg to differ that this sofa is actually off the wall design. The "sofa", which is made of texturized vinyl, rubber, iron, wood, foam is designed to. What better way to make your friends feel like fat-asses then to have them sit on this.

Ugly Sofa #4- Catcus Sofa
Ok so this obviously isn't a designer sofa but it definitely caught my eye and had me slightly peaked for a little while. Yes we can see that it's obviously not the most comfy sofa in the world but

Ugly Sofa #5- Lava Sofa by Studio Vertijet

While I absolutely love the color of this sofa, that's just about the end of my excitement for this piece. The weird flowing, bulging blob down the center and the weird mat-like thingy spewing out of that was enough to put this sofa on the list. Too bad, it has so much potential!

Craigslist deal of the day- free Chesterfield sofa

Resume tip: Courses, Smourses

DO NOT PUT YOUR COURSES ON YOUR RESUME!!!

When looking for job in the design field, no matter if it is at a showroom or a firm, never list the courses you have taken. The reason being, no one knows the details of the courses that you have listed and if it's confusing or doesn't pertain to the company they will toss the resume almost instantly. IE: Applying to a furniture showroom and putting that you've taken a textiles class.

The catch 22 is that the knowledge that you have gained from these classes could potentially land you a job, it's about how it is presented. The best way to go about this is adding your experience on your resume as your skills. Instead of putting that you took AutoCad 101, put that you are experienced in AutoCad programming. If you have taken a class in textiles, don’t put Textiles 101 but “fluent with textile specifications.”

Case of the disappearing water heater

Spring is finally here! Along with with the blooming trees and flowers comes the sweet smell of spring cleaning and redesigning. The big goal of the summer is to redo the kitchen in my apartment. The kitchen has great bones and quirks; large built in, nice size pantry, colorful flooring, large windows, new white appliances, and a large retro sink.

I plan on coyly persuading my landlord to let me paint and tile, and with new window treatments this kitchen will be dynomite!! That is with the exception of the huge, unattractive water heater in the middle of the room. Being that this is an older building there is a slim chance the landlord is going to do any remodeling, at least not right now. With this in mind a simple, yet creative, solution has to be made to camouflage the water heater.

Help! Send any of your suggestions to hide this monstrosity!!!

Design shows: Clean House VS Clean Sweep

Being that I have been on leave for 6 weeks I have been able to work on my blogs and watch a mind numbing amount of hours of HGTV, StyleTv and TLC. I have even called Comcast and hexed their homes when they screwed up and took away my channels by accident. (Don't worry, the hexes have since been removed.) There are shows that I have been enjoying the most such as Color Splash, Curb Appeal, Deserving Design, Clean House, Designed to Sell and on occasion, Myles of Style. I then became hooked on the show Clean House because it is a hour long and it's on almost all day. I had my reservations at first but a show that goes to someones junk-filled home and helps the homeowner to rid the clutter and in turn start them fresh with newly painted and designed rooms is just so sweet. Grant it the families are putting all of their business out for the world to see, we are watching major life changing events right in front of our eyes!

On another morning, while blogging at dawn, I started watching TLC and Clean Sweep came on. It has been a long time since I've seen this show, but I remembered why it was such a success. It was a simple, yet meaningful show. A show about going into a families junk-filled home, helping the family clean and sort the clutter and in turn giving them newly painted...wait a minute....why does this sound so familiar??

Back in the beginning of the design show epidemic, there were big hits like Trading Spaces and Designers Challenge. And then there was Clean Sweep, the show to help homeowners clean out certain room, then they'd rummage the piles and sort them into three piles: toss, sell, keep. Essentially they would have a yard sell, keep the proceeds and the items in the "keep" pile would be worked back in the home. Some of the casts members went on to big and better things- the organization specialist, Peter Walsh, has been working with Oprah and featured on her show plenty of times. The main designer, Angelo Surmelis, has other shows that he does such as 24 Hour Design and Rate My Space. But why did this show fail and Clean House succeed?

When I first saw Clean House, I was thrown as to why Neice Nash from Reno 911 was the host. Isn't she a comedian? Is she a closet interior designer?? Well come to find out that no one in the current cast have any real design background- with exception to Mark Runez who is the shows interior designer. Now this show has been on a for a few years now and originally started off with a real "Go-To Guy" who made real things, and a real "Yard Sale Diva" who was experienced in organization. Now they the show is filled with comedians whose only expertise is to hammer and hang clothes almost as if the only qualification was if they've taken a shop class...in high school...and got at least a "C". Now a cast full of comedians does make for a very entertaining show, but I can only question if they are truly in this for the love of design or if it is just a paycheck, and I'm sticking with the latter. Clean House does host an annual show called the Worlds Messiest Home (those blogs to come as well)

While the shows are incredibly similar, there are a few exceptions being Clean Sweep created separate piles for the homeowners to sort through and the family kept the money from the yard sales vs Clean House where they match the proceeds from the yard sale up to $1000 and use it in the house. But why did one show make it and the other one fail?? I am going to go with Peter Walsh moving on to big and better things and the comedic genius of Clean House

It's that time again! The Merchandise Mart is hosting the annual opening of DreamHome. DreamHome is the gathering of some of the most talented interior designers who create custom rooms using high end materials and furniture. The Preview Gala is hosted inside the DreamHome rooms and serves as the first opportunity to not only experience the spaces , and to meet the designers, but all of the proceeds from the benefit go to University of Chicago Cancer Research
Foundation (UCCRF) Women's Board.

While the tickets for the Preview Gala are for a good cause, they range from $110 for an individual to $750 for a group. The good news is that DreamHome will be in the Merchandise Mart until December 18th.

Tile Designs a New Trend

OK so I'm on a baby kick since I've had my son. After designing my son's room my landlord came to visit and said it wasn't traditional like she expected because I didn't use Pooh bear or trucks and hammers but geometric shapes and carpet tiles and framed pictures of stuffed animals. Well I love the though of breaking the mold on tradition, especially regarding baby rooms. Why not try something different, something more retro and modern for the modern day parents or single moms like myself?

So while looking for more baby furniture I came across this website called ducduc. Ducduc is based out of New York and have a great selection of modern furniture for kids. Not only do they have great collections, all of their furniture is made from Eco-friendly materials.

This was referenced by one of our friends on Facebook, Angelica. It is a modern design of two student lounges located in Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning. The lounges are located on opposite ends of the building and are meant to mirror each other by using the same acrylic pieces but different layouts and separate functions (one is for small groups and the other is for larger ones.

Hotel Sax is a beautifully designed hotel here in Chicago and is best known for their great decor, location, style and architectural detail. To add to the sleek interior, Chicago Art Source is creating a large polycarbonate sculpture installation of a translucent blue wall and loop, which gives the appearance of a floating waterfall. The bottom is to be lit with optic lights which will further add to the brilliance of its color and form.

With the economy being so tough, it is difficult to try to purchase new furniture for your apartment or home, especially if you just moved. Fortunately we have Craigslist! Not only can you purchase furniture but you can find a huge assortment of free goodies.

Here we start Operation: Furnish Home For Free With Craigslist...or FHFFWC for short...alright, maybe just Operation: Furnish House. We will randomly choose a city and to see what free goodies are posted that can be used to furnish a room. If you are in the area and have a vehicle and an extra hand you might be in luck.

Here we found a light fixture, sofa, coffee table, bookshelf, TV and stand.

Modern black light fixture

32" Sony television- No picture but I'm sure we have an idea of what a tv looks like.

TV stand- Can be really nice with a can of primer, expresso paint and caster wheels

Sofa- Ok, so it's not attractive but it can be dressed with a slipcover and some throw pillows...and it's free

Black metal bookshelf- Can be cleaned or spray painted silver for a more modern look.

The Smart Home is back! The home is a modular space built and furnished with tons of eco-friendly goodness such as recycled tiles, solar panels, to reclaimed wood for alot of the furniture. The exhibit starts March 19th and continues thru January 3rd of 2010 so if you don't live in Chicago but plan on visiting in the next year it is definitely a site worth checking out.

Terrifying Tea House

The Takasugi-an teahouse not only caught my eye because of it's uniqueness, but also because of it's downright scariness. This quaint tea house, built by Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori, is not only extremely compact but it is also perched on replanted chestnut trees that have been cut from a local mountain. The only way to get in is by using free-standing ladders, which further add to its unstableness. The Tea house has an amazing view from the inside and when looking at it from the outside it almost appears to float in air as the thin trees that hold the house blend into the wooded background.

Although cool, things like this remind me why I drink coffee.

Rockin' rocking chair

This super futuristic rocking chair, designed by Pouyan Mokhtarani, not only has a cool and sleek design, but the chair also has 8 liquid filled cushions mimic that those of the torso and even has two watery cushions in the seat that are apparently designed to help prevent your butt from sweating. While the design is definitely unique, it is still left to be determined exactly how comfortable is really is, and if it is indeed butt-sweatproof.

Burling with fun

Although it's not an easy task, here is a way to create the burl effect on wood.

Tear cheesecloth into 6-foot-long pieces, and set them aside. Keep a supply of clean cloths handy so that when a cloth becomes loaded with glaze, you can discard it for a new one. Don't use any cloth that has frayed edges; small threads can get into the glaze and mar the finish.

Lay the door on a large table, preferably with enough room around it so that you can move from one area to another while working on it. Base-coat the entire surface with an eggshell or satin paint, custom-mixed to a warm, golden wood tone. Let this base coat dry thoroughly.

Working within the area defined by the painter's masking tape defining the border, coat the entire surface with a thin layer of satin oil varnish taken straight from the can. Ball a piece of cheesecloth in your hand, and moisten it by dipping it into the varnish can. Put just enough varnish on the cloth to make it slide easily on the surface and hold the color in place. Then dip the cloth into the burled wood color and work the color over the varnish-coated surface using squiggly circular strokes, as shown. (Fig. 1)

Then go back and define the burls. Dip a pipe grainer into mineral spirits, and off-load the excess onto newspaper or paper towels until the grainer is damp, but not wet. Holding it at a 45-degree angle and as parallel to the surface as possible, make short radiating strokes through the burls. To add authenticity and emphasis to your pattern use a thin, pointed artist's brush to paint black rings around some of the shapes created by your strokes. Let the burled wood area dry thoroughly.

Job hunting tips

The economy has hit the workforce hard over the last year and there are countless people who have either been looking for work or people who have worked for companies for years that are getting laid off. With so many people on the hunt for work at once, the competition for a job is hot. Here are a few tips that I have gotten from showrooms and designers on how to get your resume noticed.

Don’t just hand your resume to a receptionist. Always ask for the manager or find out who they are beforehand and come back and give it to them person. Additionally, put your resume in an envelope. If you absolutely have to leave your resume with a receptionist, putting it in an envelope makes it more personalized to the manager AND you don’t have secondary eyes scanning your resume. Trust me, it could easily get ridiculed all the way back to the manager and tossed before you know it.
Post your resume on Craigslist in multiple places.
At this point in time it really is about who you know. Plenty of people can post their resumes or drop them off but I have seen first hand that people are getting hired because they know someone in the company. So how do you go about meeting the “right” people? Here are some tips on that as well:

If there are any free seminars, go to them. There are a lot of managers and designers who attend them as well and it would be a good way to talk to them one on one and even pass on your resume.
This refers back to showrooms, always good to meet with supervisors or managers. Even if on the first couple of times you don’t mention that you are looking for work, just that you have an interest in the showroom and then approach them about possible job opportunities. It is a time investment but it will payoff in the long run.
Don’t just go for showrooms, post resumes in design centers. Here in Chicago the Merchandise Mart is the major design center in the city which homes over a hundred showrooms. Although they are intermingled, they are totally separate entities. Besides applying to showrooms, also apply within the building itself.

In the Merchandise Mart the 4^th and 5^th floors are the Corporate Offices. I have been told by designers that there are usually job postings listed there AND you can drop off your resume as well.

So as unfortunate as it is, there are many landlords and building restrictions that prevent tenants from painting walls. Just because you can't paint color on the walls doesn't mean you can't add color to the wall in an alternative way. Here a few ideas of how to creatively spruce up your dull walls.

Modern LCD Cutting Board

Now that we are in the new millennium, its time to start cooking like it. With that, it's time to recycle the wooden cutting boards and to pull out the LCD cutting board. This concept board, by Nardo Design, has a sleek and smooth design housing a LCD screen inside the board that displays recipes and has a port that allows you to upload more.

The downside to this is that unless you cook with dull knives, the screen will eventually become pretty difficult to read and no matter how good of a chef you are, I think we all know about the little rule about mixing electronics and water.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be Bruce Wayne and to live like one with your bat compadres? The closest you might come is by living in a huge home...in a cave. If you are looking in the Festus, Missouri area then this house should be perfect.

In 2003 a family found this cave ON Ebay and in a matter of 4 years built a cozy home in the cavern hole. The house is a whooping 15,000 sq/ft consisting of three chambers which containing the three bedrooms, a large kitchen, laundry room, party room, an indoor pond, a performance stage which has seen the likes of Tina Turner to Ted Nugent. The house maintains energy efficiency by staying cool naturally because of it's location but also by incorporating geothermal panels to the plan.

Considering that two bedroom condos can sell on average of $250,000, this house is practically a steal costing a cool $300,000!

HGTV Showdown #3- Bedroom Challenge

This week designers John Gidding and James Lunday compete with Steve Hanneman and Taniya Nayak and are challenged to makeover a bedroom for Mr and Mrs Finger. The couple is hoping to have their space changed from a multicolored room to a simple space with Asian influence.

John and James are the runners-up in their room where they went for a tradition sense with a platform bed while using non-traditional colors to bring a uniqueness to the space.

The winners are Steve and Taniya who used rich, dark furniture and flooring and created a red floor to ceiling headboard.

In the second week of HGTV's Showdown design team Kim Myles and Matt Locke faced off with Jennifer Bertrand and Todd Davis to design a playroom for a couples two daughters.

Kim and Matt designed a room that incorporated a small stage, a drawing wall and plenty of storage. Jennifer and Todd created a fun and colorful room with birds large pink flowers and painted on the walls. It also included a play area and a window treatment that lowers to a secluded canopy of fun. While both spaces were unique and creative, Kim and Matt were the winners in the couples eyes.

A woman named Dee Williams lives in Seattle, Washington in a house that is a mere 84 square feet! The house has a functioning, yet small kitchen and a lavatory and is powered by two solar panels.

Staying warm while being green

Winter is almost over but it doesn't hurt to stay warm for the last few months of cold weather ahead. If you have a home with radiator heating, there is a simple and green way to conserve your heat. Design Trend- Hollywood Regency

One design trend that is hot on the scene is Hollywood Regency. The trend which started in the 1920's-1930's and was devised to enhance the richness of a person's home by adding glitz and glam.

There are many different design programs on the market: AutoCad, Viz, SmartDraw just to name a few. The problem is these can be pretty expensive and are usually only readily available on a school campus or by downloading for a short demo period. Fortunately there is Google Sketchup- a free downloadable program that allows you to design furniture or an entire room by creating sketches, 2D and 3D presentations. Not only can you create your own custom pieces, you can also download items from the 3D Warehouse.

SketchUp allows you to create an entire atmosphere and to become part of the SketchUp communities in which you can upload your creations for others to view, see hundreds of other models, and upload and animate your design to put on YouTube.

Farewell Domino

Due to the stresses on the economy, the popular design magazine, Domino, is taking a bow and closing their doors.

Since entering the design scene in 2004, Domino has published 28 issues and has featured celebrities from Drew Barrymore to Zooey Deschanel. They have also enlightened us with the Daily Dose blogs, their multitude of creative DIY projects as well as tossing in some unique cooking recipes.

Stackable Rainbow

Furniture designer, Christian Flint, has taken the traditional idea of stacking chairs to a whole new level, by stacking them horizontally. His creation- Stackable Rainbow- incorporates colorful, is a row of plastic chairs that when aligned create a long bench with a rainbow colored effect. To add to the many awards that he has already achieved over the years, he won the 2005 Design Award in the Copenhagen International Furniture Fair for this particular installment.

Melting building is hot in paris

There are some buildings that are so amazing architecturally that they are simply too hot to handle such as

What about a building that appears to be melting at the seams? This facade, located at 39 Avenue George V Paris, is built as a trompe-l’oeil, not only giving it an amazing illusion, but concealing a grouping of buildings being constructed behind it.

Incredible Building In Paris ! -

If you regularly go on the side of the Avenue George V in Paris, you probably thought to have a vision, like us, passing the number 39 of the avenue. The facade of the building seems fluid is contorted and it rubs eyes to be sure not to dream! Well actually, this is a facade that hides behind a renovation of the building that houses a large group sharing. The illusion is quite spectacular. Marketing operation behind this large-format, the same team that had installed a trunk in front of the giant Louis Vuitton store on the Champs Elysees during its renovation.

Finally, if you have the eye, you probably notice that on the Champs, another front to deceive the eye made its appearance last few weeks back, will open next fall at the 3rd Nespresso boutique in Paris. We still need this operation at the same company. Hat!

Tough times for designers

The huge stress on the economy has definitely taken it's toll on the design industry. From small design firms to large corporations, finding and maintaining a job has not been easy. Large companies such as Home Depot, Williams- Sonoma, Wickes, have either had large amounts of lay offs or have filed for bankruptcy.

Some companies such as Linens & Things, House & Garden, and Domino magazine and have been forced to close their doors for good.

Oh sweet Suzani

Suzani's were the hottest trend in early 2008 andI don't think they will be leaving anytime soon. With their elaborate designs and craftsmanship they have the ability to enhance a space with minimal effort.

A Suzani, which means "needlework", was traditionally made by the women of Uzbekistan from when they are young women to adults. The beautifully crafted embroidery is highly desired because of its craftmanship and is now available worldwide. Suzanis are a very versatile textile being used for bedding, wall hangings and even tablecloths.

Madeline Weinrib is a designer based out of New York who incorporates suzanis into her design lines. Maybe Fred Flinstone had it right all along with his stony abode. How much more green can one get by having a rock house with concrete and wood furniture, and to tying it together with a Mammoth rug that was recycled from the days hunt??

To bring the Flintstones to the future there is the Pasadena EcoHouse designed by architect Robert Mechielsen. The eco-friendly house ,which is currently under construction, is hoping to become the first LEED Platinum home. The building is primarily made of concrete and recycled materials such as the windows, countertops, wood and even rainwater systems. It's a Showdown on HGTV

So if you don't know by now HGTV Showdown is back!

The show is made up of two design teams that are both given a replica of a the same room in a couple's home. The teams are challenged to create a unique design for the rooms under the client's specifications and are only given a full four hours to do so. The teams are given an advantage by having total use of the design warehouse for any supplies and furniture they might need.

Spoiler alert! If you have not seen the shows and are planning on catching up this is a spoiler alert about who has won and photos of the spaces!

The first week was Genevieve Gorder and Carter Oosterhouse on one team and Monica Pedersen and Eric Stromer on the other had to to create a living room for a couple who wants to have a space designed for conversation and entertainment. Although both teams designed great spaces, the winners were Genevieve and Carter.

Have you gone into any fabric houses recently and thought you could design a better pattern then they? Well now you can put that to the test.

Spoonflower.com is a company based out of North Carolina that allows you to customize a design by choosing a pattern, creating and arranging your layouts and then having it produced on the 100% cotton which can be used for many projects such as pillows, bags, and even homemade dolls. Not only does their website assist you with arranging your design and layout, the costs for the material is extremely reasonable at only $18/yard and starting at $3 to ship in the US! Spoonflower also highlights their customers designs that are viewed and voted upon by other patrons. If your design is voted number one, it is highlighted on the website and made available for others to purchase for one week.

Books Might be Deceiving

Stansliv Katz has done it again. I had previously blogged about Stansliv's bookshelf which incorporated a bookshelf and lounge seat in the center. Here Stansliv showcases his creativity by creating a bookshelf that has fun bold colors and plays on eye-trickery.

The bookshelf which is very reciprocal of the 80's game "Qbert" is completely functional and is only twelve inches deep.

Let Me Grade Your Wood

Let's take this time to appreciate a major element in design that has been bestowed upon us by mother nature: wood.

With its variety of shapes, sizes, and species there is so much to know about wood it's hard to know where to begin! In this blog I'm going to discuss one of the "G"s of wood- Grade.

The grading of lumber is determined by how many defects and imperfections are in the wood. The clearer the wood, the higher the grade. Here is a breakdown of different grading:

Clear- to have clear wood is to have wood virtually free of any defects.
Select- is a grade lower than clear because it has some natural defects such as knots
Common- has even more natural characteristics like select grade that are chosen to highlight the defects in the wood. There are two variations- Number 1 Common and Number 2 Common: No 1 Common showcasing various colors, knots and wormholes and No 2 showing the characteristics of the species of wood
First
First grade wood has the best appearance, natural color variations and limited character marks.
Second
Second grade wood is variegated in appearance with varying sound wood characteristics of species.
Third
Third grade wood is rustic in appearance allowing all wood characteristics of the species.

Showroom Etiquette- Part 1

Going into high end showrooms or design stores can be very intimidating, especially for students. I have met who students have come my showroom and are very timid or very confident, some who work for designers, some who acknowledge that they merely students. I've also met some extremely cocky and nervous new designers whose showroom etiquette could use some tweaking.

So what is the best approach when entering a showroom? What is the best way for students or beginning designers to stand their ground and get the respect they deserve as a professional?

Here are a few tips:

Always dress appropriately- This does not mean dress in a suit and tie everytime you go to a showroom, but it is true about first appearances. Dress casual, as if you are going to a lounge with some friends for drinks. It never hurts to have a nice blazer and shoes. Not only are the reps at the showroom looking, our profession is all about networking. You never know if while you are out if you will meet someone and where that might lead. A simple meeting at a showroom COULD lead to an invite to a cocktail party afterwards with other designers.
Don't bring bookbags!- Large green tubes, sketch pads, even rolling bags are a huge sign that you are student. Unless it is a great rush to get some samples, leave all projects at the house and make a day or afternoon of going to showrooms. Even if you as a student, there are many showrooms, events, stores that give away free bags with their names on them. Having your projects and samples in these bags with you (if you need them) will not only look more professional, but will show that you have been around the block to other showrooms.
State your name, it's your claim- If you are a student, a beginning designer or just plain interested in the showroom and someone ask who you are, tell them your name! Unless you actually have a company like Jane Doe Designs, feel confident in saying who you are. You should refrain from giving backgrounds such as "Hi, I'm a student at Design School and I just wanted to look around because I have an assignment that is due next week and I wanted to....." trust me, they don't care.
Don't leave your drinks at the front- Working for a showroom, I have seen how extremely irritated receptionist get when someone asks if they can leave their drink up front while they look around. You wouldn't leave your drink at the front of a high end clothing store to look around; same premise here. The reception desks are generally small in showrooms or stores and there is nothing worse then smelling someone's latte while they browse around, and a great majority wind up forgetting that it's there and now you have turned into "that" designer who leaves their trash. Trust me, if you can try to down it and toss it before you enter.
Tearsheets, tearsheets, tearsheets- This is a biggie. Alot of sales associates do not sit, stand or walk around the showroom waiting for people to come in, especially just to hand out tearsheets. As people on commission, they are on the hunt for a sale. Therefore, it is best to do your research on the store first. Majority of the time any product that you need a tearsheet of can be found online. If you cannot find it, then it is a good idea to go in and see if they have any additional information on the piece, but at least this way they know that you are familiar with their products and their website. Addiontally, have the information (such as the item number) for the product that you are requesting the tearsheet for! Don't just say "Can I have a tearsheet for that round table in the back?" I've seen it a million times, even from professionals and it is no bueno my friend

If you could design a kitchen with the most high-end features and products, what would you use? Maple cabinets? Marble counter tops? A stainless steel refrigerator with a touch-screen? What about a crystal-encrusted toaster? That's right, if toasters with radios built in weren't fancy enough, designer Russel Hobbs has created the most fancy of all toasters by studding it with Swarovski crystals. This high-end toaster is made of stainless steel, frosted glass and 114 crystals. While this two-sliced toaster does not suffice as an engagement ring, does not bake any cool designs into the bread, and can only be bought online- it is a limited edition piece, with only 1000 units made worldwide. It runs a cool $500 USD and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Dining by Design, an annual fundraiser

It's that time again! DIFFA Dining by Design will have it's seventh-annual design event in the Merchandise Mart, directed to raise money for Chicago agencies fighting AIDS/HIV. Dining by Design is a compilation of top local and national designers who are given a 11'x11' empty space and a dining table seating 10 showcase their ultimate creativity incorporating design, fashion and architecture. The three day extravaganza starts November 6 - 8.
